The first Europeans came to the El Paso area as early as 1581. For many years, settlers went back and forth and there were Native Americans in the area and Spanish settlers moved in as well. El Paso officially became part of the country with the rest of Texas in 1845. The railroad came to the area in 1881, quickly expanding the businesses in the city. The University of Texas in El Paso opened in 1914 and the Franklin Mountain State Park was formed in 1979. Today, El Paso is a thriving Texas town with many attractions and sights.

One of the most popular places to visit in the city is the Franklin Mountains State Park. This park is the largest urban park in the country with wonderful history in the form of geology. It also holds the highest structural point in the state. The Franklin Mountains act as a striking contrast to the city of El Paso. The mountains overlook the Rio Grande River as well as the city buildings. For many years tourists have passed through the gaps in the mountains looking for gold, adventure and entertainment. Over the years, settlers and explorers left their marks on the rocks in the area. You can still see many pictographs and carvings on the boulders that were used as shelters throughout the park. The park has two main hiking trails offering more than 100 miles of walking. The park conducts many tours each day for the general public in order to teach people about the park and its preservation over the years.

While they are in the park, many visitors enjoy the Wyler Aerial Tramway that features an aerial cab car. The gondola transports guests to the top of the Ranger Peak over a 2,600-foot long ride. The ride only takes four minutes but the views from the top are breathtaking. You can see 7,000 square miles including three different states. The tramway is a memorable way to visit some of the most beautiful areas in the southwest.

If you are a serious rock climber, you can visit Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site. This area is just 32 minutes away from the city and features a historic ranch house as its interpretive center. There are also stagecoach station ruins and plenty of wonderful rock drawings and pictographs. Visitors can take tours to view the most special drawings in the area and learn which of the three distinct cultures the drawings represent. This area is also very popular for rock climbing. Visitors will need to obtain the proper permits and bring or rent all of the right equipment in order to be allowed to climb in the park.

El Paso is a terrific city to visit when you want to enjoy pleasant temperatures. There are, however, occasional rainy days that may send you inside. On those days, there are many different museums and cultural centers you can visit. One of the best such attractions is the El Paso Holocaust Museum. The museum honors those who perished as well as those who survived the dreadful events surrounding that era. It also educates visitors about the Holocaust and Nazi power. The museum is open every day of the week but Monday and is free to the public.

The city also houses the Insights Science Museum. Children love this museum, which was first opened in 1980. The permanent exhibits teach children and adults about centrifugal force, the tesla coil and many other scientific facts and discoveries.

El Paso has some of the most beautiful state parks and sights in the state. When you are ready for a true, relaxing Texas vacation, book a room in one of the El Paso luxury hotels.
